Steve Landis BioSteven Landis (he/him) is an Adjunct Instructor at Guilford College and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and he serves as instructor of double bass and composition at the Music Academy of North Carolina. He is also a founding member and bassist of the Winnfield Quartet and a section member of The Raleigh Symphony Orchestra.
As a composer, Steven works with many mediums including solo instrumental, mixed chamber groups, large ensembles, digital and mixed media, and film and theater. Steven has held residencies at the Millay Colony, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and Wildacres Artist Retreat. Steven earned his DMA in Composition at The University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, a MM in Composition from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a MM in Double Bass Performance and a BM in Composition from The University of Florida. |

"Propulsive, static, falling, climbing, hopeful, despondent, reverent, humorous; the music in this single-movement work is in a constant state of change. The nature of the work refutes the illusory idea of permanence. Rather, it celebrates it, makes peace with it, peeks behind the curtain, and smiles."
Originally for tuba and chamber orchestra (2021). A chamber version (2022) for tuba, double bass, percussion, piano, and off-stage tuba-euphonium ensemble was created for performance at SERTEC 2022 by the Winnfield Quartet. The work is inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Dr. Dennis Askew.

A Bit about Dr. AskewA faculty member at UNCG since 1992, he served for over seven years in his administrative role, first as the Dept. Head of Music Performance in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, and then as Director of the School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. He also served as a professor of tuba, euphonium, and music education.
Dr. Askew was a member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) Commission on Accreditation. A former member of the Brass Staff for Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, he also served as Consultant to the Board of Directors for Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps. Dr. AsKew received degrees from the University of Michigan, Penn State University and the University of Georgia. Dr. Askew attended the Eastman School of Music’s Leadership Institute in 2017 and received the Huron Leadership Certificate from the American Council on Education in 2016. He served as President for the International Tuba Euphonium Association, Assistant Dean for the School of Music (1998-2000), and was host of the 2002 International Tuba/Euphonium Conference. In 2003, he was elected an Associate Regent for Pi Kappa Lambda, the music honor society. Dr. AsKew was active as a performer, having given solo performances throughout North America, Europe, and Australia, as well as numerous concerts throughout the United States and China as a member of the Market Street and Palladium Brass Quintets. |
